Squanto (Tisquantum) is seized by members of John Smith’s crew on Cape Cod.
1614
He and some 20 other members of the Patuxet tribe are seized by a group Smith left behind to establish a trading post on Cape Cod. The Native Americans are sold as slaves in Malaga, but rescued by Spanish friars. Somehow, Squanto makes his way to England, is taken into the household of John Slaney, a member of the Newfoundland Company. He learns English, becomes a translator for the company in Canada, and, after returning to England, is brought back to Cape Cod in 1619.*
